4 Warning Signs of “Invisible Baldness”

If your ponytail feels thinner, you could be experiencing invisible baldness.

A healthy scalp contains about 100,000 hairs, and according to recent research, you can lose up to 50,000 of them without even noticing. Invisible baldness is essentially the thinning hair that goes unnoticed until half of it has fallen out. It may be difficult to detect baldness until it’s very noticeable — so how can you find out if you’re experiencing hair loss? Here are 4 signs that you may be at risk:

Change in Hair Texture

Any change in hair texture, such as thinner or lighter hair, could be an indicator of hair loss. If you find that you’re able to twist your elastic band around your hair many more times than you used to, consult a doctor about invisible baldness.

Family History

If you have members in your family that have experienced hair loss, your risk for developing it is increased. It’s a commonly held myth that genetic hair loss is only inherited from one side of the family or the other. In truth, you can inherit the thinning hair gene from either your mother or father.

Difference in Hair Cut

For those of you that have your hair cut regularly, you might notice a change in hair coverage after your next appointment. If you notice irregular thinning, you could be experiencing hair loss.

Shedding Hair

It’s common to lose several hairs when brushing or combing your hair. Large clumps of hair your brush, however, could be indicative of hair loss. Take notice of the hair that collects while you take a shower as well.
